Naval architect engineering who materialized the world best naval architect technology
Head director Gye Sik Min is famous as an ‘inventor CEO in the naval architect industry’ who devoted himself to research and development with a concentrated mind to contend for victory with technology development in addition to management activities as the head director of Hyundai Heavy Industries.
On the basis of academic background and abundant actual work experiences in industries, he grew and developed Hyundai Heavy Industries to a global comprehensive heavy company by performing huge amount of actual design works in spite of harsh circumstances in initial period of marine engineering in Korea and contributed to make Korea to the world top leading country of marine engineering.
Since early the 1990s, he carried forward technology development in overall heavy industrial fields such as engine machinery, construction instrument, electrical and electronics, and power generation/chemical engineering plant as well as marine engineering to make a great contribution to technology independence and elevation to the world top class.
Head director Gye Sik Min raise the Hyundai Heavy Industries to a global company today through technology development as CEO and CTO of Hyundai Heavy Industries. Hyundai Heavy Industries achieved the highest shipbuilding record within the shortest period in the world shipbuilding industry by delivering over 40 million tons in 1994 and 100 million tons of ships in 2005 from the naming ceremony of No.1 ship in 1974 and spurred continued development of new shipbuilding technology on the basis of all type shipbuilding experiences and the largest scale of research personnel.
Developed the best naval architect design technology including LNG transport ship, supersized container transport ship, and offshore plant and grew up Hyundai Heavy Industries to a global company with HiMSEN engine, a power generation system and industrial robot.
He led the global market by devoting himself to development of new product and new technology for the extra-large LPG carrier, a high value-added ship with the LNG carrier and made a great contribution to the establishment of status as the world top class shipbuilding country by developing high value-added ships including extra-large LNG carrier and extra-large container carrier.
Also in the marine industrial area, he developed and manufactured marine equipment, immobile structure, semi-submersible floating structure, submerged pipeline installation, and floating-type marine production, storage, and unload equipment and performed installation of submerged pipeline as long as 4,800 km and 300 million tons of structure by performing about 160 construction events in the whole world. In addition, with total assembly technique on the land to manufacture a ship without any building dock, he progressed successfully AMENAM FPU construction of a 51,000-ton structure, using semi-submersible production equipment, jack-up platform, and floating equipment. This was selected as Korea Top 10 new technology and listed in the Guinness Book of Records in 2001.
He led global market by developing ‘HiMSEN’ Engine’ with absolutely independent technology in August, 20000 and supplied diesel total 344 power generation equipment including 1,700 kW class container type diesel power generation equipment developed independently for the first time in Korea and 2,500 kW class power generator for land to all regions of Cuba in December 2007.
Since 2001, he has carried forward five major intensive projects comprising quality improvement of main products, advancement of core technology, top-class making of production technology, development of new production/technology, and creation of new business in order to create ‘World Top Class Products’ supervised of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy under his lead and obtained the performance that sales of Hyundai Heavy Industries increased from 6.6 trillion won to 15.5 trillion won by more than 2.3 times.
Refusing several professor invitation requests from the academia, he kept his position in the industry and played pivotal roles in writing activities on his research and development and academic association activities with ceaseless fever. He had about 220 articles published domestically and internationally and about 100 patents and utility models applied and registered in Korea. With the acknowledgment of these achievements, he received the best CEO prize and Korea Best Scientist and Engineer Awards as well as March 1st Culture Prize, the 1st Korean Engineering Awards, Order of Science and Technology Merit, Ungbi Medal. He serves as a lifetime member and chairman of the Society of Naval Architects of Korea, a lifetime member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology, founding member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, and vice-chairman of international ships and ocean engineering research council successively. By leading technology development of maritime research institute, industrial technology research institute, machinery, and electric research institute, and techno design research institute to develop high value-added ships and marine equipment, production automation equipment, engine, industrial robot, construction equipment, and electric/electronic equipment system and graft design and IT technology, he took the lead in securing product competitiveness and established advance technology acquisition and international technology network by foundation of US Advanced Technology Center (ITC), Hungary Engineering Center, and China research institute.
