Pulled Korea toward the powerful country in semiconductor and communication by the development of 4G DRAM and CDMA as a ‘farmer of semiconductor’ cultivating ‘the rice in the electronics industry’
Head director Jong Yong Yun led the development of the next generation’s original technology as an ex-engineer management specialist and took one step forward in the electronic industry of Korea to contribute to the construction of technical power country.
He created the Samsun sensation today, by playing a leading role in growing up toward top place in memory area and TFT LCD sector. From 1996, he devoted himself to foster the non-memory sector for a leap toward a globally recognized comprehensive semiconductor maker by growing up it, the weak point of Korean semiconductor and accomplished achievement of 1 billion dollars in annual sales of non-memory by 3 years. Especially, he initiated CPU, the exclusive business of INTEL, and multi-chip business spotlighted as the next generation’s product in order to reinforce the non-memory business and succeeded in converting it to high value-added business.
Advancing newly to the TFT LCD business called as ‘the flower of image industry’, the second semiconductor, he developed 14.2 inch VGA TFT for the first time in the world in 1993 and dominated the high value-added display market by succeeding 40 inch WIDE-XGA for HDTV overcoming 30 inch known as the limitation of TFT LCD in 2001, following the world-first development of 21.2 inch UXGA for EWS in 1996 and 30 inch class UXGA in 1997. From a point of view that it overcame difficulties as a company founded 20 years later than foreign developed companies and accomplished the world's best technical performance only within 8 years, it was considered a meaningful result that raised the level of domestic technology one step forward.
Led the power country of technology with the largest investment in technical development and contributed to the elevation of national competitiveness with international standards and patents
He strived to enhance the national image and competitiveness of the country by showing leadership in the international standardization groups. He prepared the base of systematic standardizing activities by organizing an ‘international technology study group’ and obtained results that 40 technologies were adopted as the international standard in MPEG-4, MPEG-7, and DVD area by showing leadership in the international standardization group. He created an income of several trillion from royalty by joining MPEG LA uniquely as a Korean company. In order to make systemic and aggressive policies related to standardization, he established newly an organization to promote standardization to present strategic direction for standardizing Samsung Electronics and constructed a system capable of discovering a new standardization and respond to it pre-emptively. He secured the initiative by highlighting internal and external image via activities in standardization and reinforced it in the introduction period of the new product after standardization by strengthening the position for adaptation of standard technology as a standard. He acquired both material and immaterial results such as reinforcement of industrial cooperation and technological status of Korea, and prior information exchange for next-generation technology standardization.
He strived to foster key superior human resources including operation of a professional research center for reinforcement of competitiveness in future and operated ‘research institutes’ on which the sun never sets by establishing 9 domestic and foreign institutes. As you can see from his management philosophy that ‘there is no excellent company without excellent personnel’, he considered ‘personnel’ as an important key resource, emphasizing the preciousness of each staff and strived to prepare the core competence in future through development of human resources by innovating training system to adapt to and lead the fast exchanging environment.
3 specialized research institutes established newly at that time including advanced technology institute, global marketing institute, and leader development center helped for Samsung Electronics to hold better human resources than any other advanced companies in the world by granting motivation of self-development to their organization members. Besides supporting a development fund of 20 billion won to strengthen engineering training competitiveness of domestic universities (Seoul National University, DGIST, Kyungpook National University, and Yeungnam University), he tried to foster key personnel in the future.
